Next Step Housing

The Legacy Crossing
The Next Step Housing Program at UMOM New Day Centers focuses on finding affordable, permanent housing for families who have lived in the Emergency and Transitional Shelters at UMOM as well as families from the community who are at-risk for homelessness.

Housing Assessments
When families come to UMOM looking for safe shelter they immediately complete a housing assessment with a Housing Case Manager. We determine whether a family has low or high barriers to housing. Examples of low barriers would be an eviction, one parent out of work, poor credit history, or a low but sustainable source of income. High barriers would be things like criminal convictions, multiple evictions, no income or marketable skills, mental illness, and substance abuse issues.
If a family has low barriers to housing our Next Step case managers may be able to find permanent, afforable housing in one of our apartment complexes or another community in the Valley. We have several relationships with Valley property owners and management companies that allow us to work with a family to obtain housing.
If a family has high barriers to housing they may need to stay in a UMOM shelter program before they are ready to maintain stable housing on their own. UMOM has had many families move from shelter programs into an affordable housing unit and our Next Step team provides follow-up case management services for one year after they leave the shelter campus.
Rapid Re-Housing
The Rapid Re-Housing Program identifies families that are experiencing homelessness and helps identify permanent housing options for these families by providing rent subsidies to help them get back on their feet.
If a family shows low barriers to housing they can qualify for time-limited subsidies based on family need ranging from three to 18 months. Each quarter the family is reassessed for eligibility based on income and program compliance. Families recieve home visits and resources from UMOM Next Step staff.

Program Services
UMOM believes that to truly make a difference in the lives of our families, it requires more than rent relief. It requires additional support and services that will help families truly change their lives. A variety of Support Programs are available at each of our communities. With full-time Program Managers on-site and a Program Center equipped with learning materials and computers, we offer adults education classes ranging from English as a second language, financial management, and job training seminars. For children we offer tutoring programs, after-school activities, summer reading programs, and monthly field trips.
