UMOM In the News: "Non-profit UMOM seeks tax credits to convert former Phoenix motel"
From the Arizona Republic, Tuesday, March 20, 2012:
UMOM New Day Centers has applied for low-income housing tax credits to convert a former Sunnyslope-area motel into an affordable-housing complex.
The non-profit acquired the North Mountain Lodge property, 10825 N. Cave Creek Road, in early November.
"We already owned the (affordable-housing) property directly to the south, Casa de Paz Sahuaro, and we'd had a real interest in someday owning that old motel so we could completely rebuild it," said Dave Hepburn, chief housing officer for UMOM.
But Fannie Mae's initial asking price was about $1 million out of UMOM's reach. The organization got its chance after the previous owner, who had converted the motel into an apartment building, defaulted on the mortgage and Fannie Mae took over the property, Hepburn said.
After an appraiser estimated the property's value at much less, from $460,000 to $500,000, Fannie Mae accepted UMOM's offer of $348,000.
The tax credits UMOM is applying for through the Arizona Department of Housing would allow the non-profit to demolish the old building, constructed in the early '60s, and build one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments for low-income residents.
UMOM also would like to build a 3,600-square-foot community center to serve residents and area neighbors Monday through Friday. Staffers would assist visitors with referrals, GED tutorials and job-placement help, among other services.
UMOM should hear back regarding the tax credits by early June. If the organization doesn't receive the credits, UMOM may wait and apply again in the next round, or it may decide to execute a modified plan on its own.
RELEASE: UMOM Awarded Funding for Housing First for Families
PRESS RELEASE
UMOM and HOM, Inc. Awarded Grant to Provide Housing First for Families
One of three Maricopa County projects funded by HUD this week
Phoenix, March 14, 2012– UMOM New Day Centers and HOM, Inc. were awarded over $390,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide permanent supportive housing for up to 25 disabled homeless adults with dependent children. The funds will be used to provide a viable permanent housing option for these vulnerable families who currently have limited options for exiting shelter.
“These units will address a critical need in our community for permanent supportive housing for homeless families,” said Darlene Newsom, CEO of UMOM New Day Centers. “For years the chronic homeless individuals have been the focus of Housing First programs. UMOM and HOM, Inc. will be the first partners to provide this approach exclusively to homeless families in Maricopa County.”
Housing First for Families will be the first housing program of its kind in Maricopa County for families experiencing homelessness. In addition to permanent housing, these families will also be able to access critical supportive services such as case management, substance abuse treatment and recovery programs, medical services, education and employment counseling on a regular basis. Such supportive services can help ensure families remain in housing permanently rather than returning to shelter.
"This is fantastic news for Phoenix as we work toward ending homelessness in our city," said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. "These programs are crucial for families in need of emergency shelter, transitional housing and support. During tough economic times, many more Phoenix families have been trying to survive or hang on day to day and that's unacceptable. We've got to work together to end homelessness in our city so everyone can have the opportunity to accomplish their dreams."
UMOM New Day Centers is the largest homeless shelter for families in Arizona. Last year UMOM provided services for over 6,000 individuals, two-thirds of whom were children. UMOM’s main campus provides safe shelter for 134 families every night. UMOM also operates an emergency shelter in downtown Phoenix, a domestic violence shelter, and over 300 units of permanent, affordable housing through the Next Step Housing Program.
HOM, Inc., Housing Operations and Management, specializes in the management of permanent supportive housing programs that end homelessness for individuals and families with special needs. HOM, Inc. operates scattered site, tenant-based rental assistance programs on behalf of Arizona Behavioral Health Corporation (ABC) for over 1,200 participant households.
A list of award recipients and details about the Homeless Assistance Awards announced by HUD this week are available online at http://ow.ly/9EU8l.

2011 campaign sets new record for fundraising and support
Phoenix, January 25, 2012– Tonight the Arizona Multihousing Association (AMA) will celebrate the completion of its annual Big Hearts for Little Hands campaign, a statewide effort to raise money for families experiencing homelessness. The proceeds will benefit UMOM New Day Centers in Phoenix, Hope Cottage in Flagstaff, and New Beginnings for Women and Children in Tucson.
This year’s effort raised more than $100,000, a new fundraising record for the apartment industry’s leading trade association. Including this donation, the AMA has raised over $600,000 to fight homelessness since 2005. In addition to the dollars raised, AMA members also collected thousands of in-kind donations for UMOM and other shelters.
“We are blown away by the incredible support we received from the AMA this year,” said Darlene Newsom, CEO of UMOM. “From collecting over 1,000 pillows for our families and furnishing new apartments for individuals in need to raising awareness of family homelessness in their communities, they have truly been a partner in our mission.”
The AMA represents more than 2,000 companies working in the rental housing industry, including management companies, independent operators and the service companies that work with them. The Big Hearts for Little Hands campaign is promoted through apartment community management companies to residents in apartment communities statewide.
“Our AMA members worked with their employees, their residents and other partners to raise funds for UMOM. Their commitment to housing for all Arizona families inspires their efforts,” said Tom Simplot, President and CEO of the AMA. “We have always known that residents in our communities care about the issue of homelessness and their incredible support this year will make an impact in ending family homeless forever.”
Apartment communities statewide collected donations for the campaign through advertising and events at their properties. A car, donated by All-City Towing, was also a raffle prize.

News Release: UMOM Receives Safety Net Grant for Non-Profit Collaboration from Bank of America
NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec. 13, 2011
FOUR VALLEY AGENCIES RECEIVE ANOTHER $400,000 GRANT FROM BANK OF AMERICA FOR COLLABORATIVE FINANCIAL STABILITY PROGRAM FOR LOW-INCOME INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES
PHOENIX, Ariz: A successful collaboration and referral system among four leading Valley-based nonprofit agencies that helps families stabilize their personal financial and housing situations has received another year of funding from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation.
The $400,000 safety net grant from Bank of America will be divided among Arizona Women’s Education and Employment (AWEE), Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC), Neighborhood Housing Services of Phoenix (NHS Phoenix) and UMOM New Day Centers (UMOM) to continue funding operational costs and service delivery. This is the second year the program has received the grant from Bank of America. Last year’s grant helped fund the launch.
The Safety Net program addresses immediate assistance through foreclosure
intervention and counseling and additional services through referrals to partnering
agencies for transitional shelter and housing; job training, preparation and placement;

food boxes, financial assistance, financial recovery workshops and Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps; and case management.
During the first year, the four agencies collectively served nearly 22,000 clients and referred 179 individuals and families to services among the collaborators. More than 45 percent of the referrals were for job readiness and placement, 23.4 percent were for permanent housing and 15 percent were for temporary housing.
“The Safety Net program has proven to be an effective, efficient and successful collaboration among four critically important organizations in metropolitan Phoenix that provide vital unduplicated services and programs,” said Bank of America President Benito Almanza. “The four agencies consistently report the positive impact of the referral program through identification and resolution of challenges that would be much more difficult to achieve independently. Unfortunately, the demand for services continues to grow in our community which makes this collaboration even more valuable.”
Progress and outcomes will continue to be measured on a regular basis through a reporting and data-collection system created specifically for this effort.

UMOM in the News: "UMOM takes homeless kids shopping"
Congratulations to UMOM's CEO, Darlene Newsom, for being named a 2012 Piper Fellow by the Viginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.
UMOM CEO Darlene Newsom
Here is the news release:
VIRGINIA G. PIPER CHARITABLE TRUST Press Release December 8, 2011
Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Recognizes Nonprofit Leaders with the Gift of Time Piper Trust Selects its 2011 Piper Fellows
PHOENIX, Ariz.—Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has named its 11th class of five Piper Fellows—leaders that work daily on the frontlines to improve quality of life for people in Maricopa County’s diverse communities. Through the Piper Fellowship, these dedicated nonprofit leaders will participate in self-designed professional development sabbaticals to further strengthen their skills and bring new knowledge back to the organizations they lead and serve.
The 2011 Piper Fellows are: Barbara Fenster, executive director, Free Arts for Abused Children of Arizona; Karl Gentles, executive director, Back to School Clothing Drive; MaryLynn Mack, deputy director, Desert Botanical Garden; Darlene Newsom, chief executive officer, UMOM New Day Centers; and Jared Sakren, producing artistic director, Southwest Shakespeare Company.
“Piper Fellows are afforded time and resources to invest in themselves and their fellowship experiences have proven to be transformative. This investment in ‘human potential’ comes back to nonprofit organizations by way of new programming, new relationships and networks, and reenergized leaders— all of which ultimately strengthens and benefits the community at large,” said Judy Jolley Mohraz, PhD, president and CEO of Piper Trust.
The newly selected Piper Fellows, chosen via a competitive process, will complete individual sabbaticals in 2012 and will become part of the enduring Piper Fellows “alumni” group that meets regularly to discuss ideas, challenges, and sensitive leadership issues. Up to five new Piper Fellows are selected each year; 46 nonprofit leaders have participated in the program to date.
Fellows’ field work during the fellowship has ranged from study with some of the world’s most renowned thinkers and innovators (e.g., Dr. Peter Senge on leadership and learning organizations) to immersion programs that expand cultural knowledge and insights. Fellowships have led to outcomes such as: team-building that aided an organization with building capacity; and, leadership development that fostered risk-taking and creativity resulting in new programming.
A Piper Fellowship offers each selected organization potential awards up to $90,000; the first $30,000 is intended to provide selected professionals with expenses for study, travel, and opportunities to visit best practice sites around the country. The Trust also awards up to $10,000 for new or increased professional development for the staff of each awardee organization. In addition, Fellows are eligible to apply for a $50,000 Organization Enhancement Grant to implement some aspect of their fellowship projects.
A committee of three community leaders, including one Piper Fellow from the previous year’s class, made Piper Fellow recommendations from among 18 applications. Judges this year were: Sunnee O’Rork, executive director, Arizona Museum for Youth and 2010 Piper Fellow; Lois Savage, president, Lodestar Foundation; and John Whiteman, president, board of directors, Whiteman Foundation.

Release: UMOM and PCH Celebrate Wellness Center Grand Opening
UMOM partners with Phoenix Children’s to open Wellness Center
Fully-licensed and newly remodeled clinic to serve homeless and vulnerable youth
Phoenix, September 20, 2011– Last week UMOM New Day Centers and Phoenix Children’s Hospital celebrated the grand opening of their newly remodeled Wellness Center on the main campus of the largest homeless shelter for families in Arizona.
“We are thrilled to celebrate the opening of this facility,” said Darlene Newsom, CEO of UMOM New Day Centers. “Through our partnership with Phoenix Children’s we will now be able to serve homeless families in need of medical care and prevent emergency room visits and illness in this population.”
PCH and UMOM have partnered for eight years to provide medical services for youth living in UMOM shelters through the Crews’n Healthmobile, a fully equipped medical clinic housed in a large bus. Now that the UMOM clinic is fully-licensed and remodeled to fit hospital standards, the Crews’n Healthmobile will be able to provide more services through neighborhood outreach while the children at UMOM receive services right on campus at the Wellness Center.

The center received full state licensure in April of 2011 and began a full remodeling project that was generously donated by Johnson Controls, the facility management company for PCH soon after. The Wellness Center is funded primarily by Phoenix Children’s Hospital, the BHHS Legacy Foundation, Healthways Foundation, and the Wal-Mart Foundation.
Last year the Wellness Center:
· conducted 145 health assessments on men, women and children
· provided intervention services for 75 children with developmental delays
· provided 128 families with supplemental vouchers for healthy food, nutrition education and breastfeeding support.
· Partnered with Community Dental Foundation to provide dental services for 44 adults and children.
· Facilitated workshops and health education classes attended by 420 residents.

UMOM Awarded VA Grant to Serve Veteran Families At-Risk of Homelessness
PRESS RELEASE
UMOM awarded VA Grant to Serve Veteran Families At-Risk of Homelessness
One of only 85 agencies funded nationwide to provide support services
Phoenix, July 26, 2011– Today UMOM New Day Centers and Save the Family were awarded $545,000 from the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) to serve veteran families experiencing orat-risk of homelessness. The funds will be used to provide support services such as case management and rapid re-housing for veteran families experiencing homelessness and eviction prevention resources for families at imminent risk of homelessness. Save the Family will serve veterans and their families in the east valley cities, and UMOM will serve the balance of Maricopa County.
“We are pleased to see the VA investing these critical dollars to help address the growing problem of homelessness among veteran families,” said Darlene Newsom, CEO of UMOM New Day Centers. “This grant, along with two others UMOM recently received, will allow us to provide a continuum of care for these families who have sacrificed so much for our country.”
These funds will allow UMOM and Save the Family to conduct outreach to the community and provide eviction prevention, Rapid Re-Housing and case management services for veteran families at-risk of homelessness as part of the new Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This initial $60 million award will serve Veteran families at 85 non-profit community agencies in 40 states and the District of Columbia under VA's new homeless prevention initiative and will reach approximately 22,000 Veteran families.
UMOM New Day Centers is the largest homeless shelter for families in Arizona. Last year UMOM provided services for over 5,000 individuals, two-thirds of whom were children. UMOM’s main campus provides safe shelter for 126 families every night. UMOM also operates an emergency shelter in downtown Phoenix, a domestic violence shelter, and 292 units of permanent, affordable housing through the Next Step Housing Program.

A former UMOM resident and her daughter were recently featured in a two-part story that aired on Telemundo Arizona on July 1 and 2. After getting the help they needed they are both doing well in an apartment of their own.
The story is in Spanish, but even if you do not speak the language you can understand how heartwarming and inspirational their story is:
This year UMOM was grateful to have the support over over 70 volunteers at our 3rd Annual Family is Forever Mother's Day celebration.
Family is Forever is organized by our amazing volunteer, Denice Brough, and bring volunteer hair stylists, makeup artists, and nail technicians to our UMOM campus to give moms at the state's largest homeless shelter for families a complete makeover.
Then families are treated to portraits by one of three volunteer professional photographers. It is truly a special event each year and UMOM is grateful to have such dedicated volunteers.
If you would like more information about this event or other ways you can help UMOM please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Michelle Hargreaves, by calling 602-889-0859 or email.

Volunteer Hair Stylists and Make Up Artists Needed!
Hair stylists and Makeup artists needed for our Annual Family is Forever Event!
Volunteers are working to organize the 3rd Annual Family Is Forever free photo shoot at UMOM on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 8th. We need volunteers from 8am until 3pm that day.
We are bringing in professional hair and makeup stylists to give the moms makeovers and photographers who will give each family a professional portrait. Each mom will receive a goody bag of beauty items and flowers.
The majority of families at UMOM have never had photos taken of their children, let alone a family portrait, so this is a very popular event. Please help us spread the word!

UMOM New Day Centers and The NRP Group to Celebrate the VIP Grand Opening of The Legacy Crossing, Friday, January 28 at 10am
UMOM New Day Centers and The NRP Group are pleased to announce the VIP Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of The Legacy Crossing Apartment Homes at 3330 E. Van Buren Street on Friday, January 28 at 10 a.m. Speakers at the event - which include Michael Trailor, Director of Arizona Department of Housing; Phoenix City Councilman Michael Johnson; Kim Dorney, Director of Housing for the City of Phoenix; and Jeffrey Greenleaf from Chase - will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by tours of the property and of the adjacent UMOM New Day Centers campus.
Today, UMOM New Day Centers reports that donations of toys, warm clothing, and dollars are in short supply this holiday season. UMOM provides shelter, housing and support services to homeless families in the Valley. As businesses, government and families struggle, they all are less able to give.
"When you see a drop in donations at this time of year, it reinforces how tough it is out there," said Darlene Newsom, UMOM CEO. The struggling economy, high unemployment and home foreclosures are like a ‘double edged sword’ for us. As the ability to give has gone down, the need for our services has never been greater. More families are facing homelessness, many who never thought they’d be in this situation. With 233 families currently on our campuses, we are at a critical stage in our ability to meet the increased demand this holiday season.”
We are asking for our community, who has so generously supported us over the years, to step up once again. Please help us in any way you can. Here’s how:
Donate toys for children of all ages.
Donate clothing for men, women, and children.
Donate gift cards.
Donate dollars.
Donations of items may be dropped off at UMOM. Dollar donations can be made online at www.umom.org or mailed. Donors can direct their charitable gift to any UMOM program, or may allow UMOM to determine where the greatest need is. You are eligible for the AZ State tax-credit for the working poor. Details available on our website.

THE STORY OF A MAN WHO FOUND HIS HEART AMONG THE HOMELESS
THE STORY OF A MAN WHO FOUND HIS HEART AMONG THE HOMELESS.
A high-powered executive whose life is destroyed by his own racism finds redemption in the most unlikely of places—a homeless shelter run by his brother.
NEWS RELEASE - October 14, 2010
LOCAL PLAYWRIGHT’S WORK FEATURED
For nearly eleven years, Mesa author and screenwriter Steve Gottry has been developing a screenplay about the impact of racism on a man, his family, and his career, titled THE BITTER SEASON.
Gottry’s script recently came to the attention of Michelle Fish, an advanced student in theater arts at Scottsdale Community College and the founder of Imaginations Theatre LLC, a new organization focused on creating opportunities for underserved children to participate in a theater program. Fish decided that the script could be adapted for the stage, and Gottry agreed to take on the task.
The issue was, THE BITTER SEASON screenplay began as an “R-rated” story in three acts, and the stage play needed to be a “G-rated” story in two acts. But, according to Fish, “the story works equally well as a movie script or a stage script, because the emotion comes through no matter what the language.” She said the play is about a “high-powered Paradise Valley computer executive whose life is destroyed by his own bigotry, but who finds redemption in the most unlikely of places—a homeless shelter run by his brother.”
Gottry added, “My own brother, Dan, is in one of the management positions at UMOM New Day Centers, a well-known Phoenix homeless shelter. They serve families from amazingly diverse backgrounds who find themselves with sudden urgent needs, so this story is not that far-fetched, especially in light of today’s economy. It’s been said that many individuals and families are just one paycheck away from homelessness. I believe that’s true.”
Fish and Gottry did not team up on this project to turn a profit. Gottry is waiving one-hundred-percent of his royalties as playwright, and Fish is donating all of her time as the producer and director of the play. Net income, if any, will be used to stage child-friendly productions, and give children an opportunity to appear before an audience. Fish believes that “the impact of applause on a child’s self-esteem is immeasurable.”
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors 55+. They are available at the door or at www.imaginationstheatre.com/tickets-merchandise.
Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays, November 11-13 and 18- 20 at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays, November 14 and 21 at 2:00 p.m. The venue is Longview Elementary School Auditorium, 1209 East Indian School Road (Indian School Road and 12th Street, Phoenix, 85014.

The Health Care Career Club is celebrating their One Year Anniversary
Today, September 24th, members of the Health Care Career Club are hosting a dinner banquet at UMOM for their family, friends, and mentors who have supported and encouraged them during their first year. On behalf of UMOM, please help us congratulate the members of this extraordinary club.
ABOUT: Health Care Career Club! HC3
Sometimes it takes hitting the bottom before you know it’s the right time to get back up and start moving forward. We are a group of people who currently reside in a homeless shelter or who have recently moved out of the shelter into a home or apartment. We have an interest in healthcare and have found the motivation and support to begin our journey into the healthcare field. It may seem odd that we found our purpose while living in the shelter, but we DID and nothing can stop us now.
Message from Dan Gottry - UMOM receives COA re-accreditation!
To the staff and Board of UMOM New Day Centers,
I am very pleased to announce that, yesterday afternoon, we received notification from Council on Accreditation of our re-accreditation!
Accreditation says a great deal about our agency, the way we conduct business, and the way in which we treat our staff, clients and constituency. It also says a great deal about each of you who are a part of this agency! We are grateful to be an agency that can proudly display the COA logo, as an accredited agency.
This accomplishment resulted from a team effort that encompassed every department in this agency. Many of you invested countless hours in this process.
I particularly want to recognize two individuals for their contributions. Diane Onofrio had the significant (and at times almost overwhelming) responsibility to coordinate this project and compile the final product that resulted in our re-accreditation! Way to go, Diane!
Connie Mitchell, a member of our Board of Directors, shared her expertise, as a COA Reviewer herself, with this agency willingly and graciously time and time again! Connie … you are always there for us and we are grateful.
Finally, on behalf of the UMOM Executive Team and its Board of Directors, I want to thank each of you for the part you played in securing our re-accreditation and in assuring UMOM continues to live up to these standards in the coming months and years!
AZ Homeless Teens Come Out of Shells With Drama Training
PHOENIX - A unique series of drama workshops is boosting the self-esteem of Arizona teenagers at a Phoenix homeless shelter. The iPlay curriculum, developed by Christopher Haines of the iTheatre Collaborative, has taught dozens of at-risk teens at the UMOM New Day Center about acting, improvisation and performance.
Haines says extra effort is required to bring the kids out of their shells.
"Working with any sort of teen group, you're going to run into those kind of issues of peer pressure and not wanting to look stupid in front of their friends and all that. But with this group, it was even more difficult for us to gain their trust."
The answer, Haines discovered, was increased individual attention, with one instructor-mentor for every four or five kids. The initial workshops were funded by a Piper Trust grant. Haines, who is artistic director of the iTheatre Collaborative, is now fund-raising for more workshops scheduled for November and next spring.
Melinda Gray, who works at the UMOM Center, says homeless kids have trust issues and are extremely reluctant to let friends and teachers know where they live. She says the iPlay program helps them to become more outgoing and to better express themselves.
"To be able to interact in a positive way but also to take more chances and, with this program, getting up and doing activities in front of their peers. Taking risks – good risks, actually, not bad ones."
Haines cites one of iPlay's successes, a 12-year old girl he describes as "awkwardly shy," who brought in a notebook filled with short stories she had written. She picked one of her stories to be used as the basis for an improvised scene.
"Performing wasn't maybe necessarily something she was interested in, but writing very much was. And so she saw the connection between her own writing and what theater could do for her writing."
Haines says he is refining the iPlay curriculum and plans to expand the workshops to other organizations that work with homeless, at-risk or disadvantaged youth.
Please join us in celebrating the one year anniversary of Helping Hands Housing Services officially becoming a part of UMOM New Day Centers.
Operating as part of UMOM's Next Step Housing Program, the vision of serving families from homelessness to permanent affordable and supportive housing is now a reality.

PHOENIX RENTAL COMMUNITY STEPS UP TO HELP THOSE WITHOUT A HOME
Phoenix, AZ - The Arizona Multihousing Association celebrates its 6th year of proudly supporting the UMOM New Day Centers by reaching out to its membership to sponsor fundraising events to alleviate the burden of homeless women and families in the Phoenix area. A running total of nearly $500,000 has been raised over the six year campaigns that each year counts on the participation of over 600 participating AMA member apartment communities and service providers.
In order to recreate the success enjoyed each year by UMOM the organization counts on a core group of 40 volunteers that comprise the Big Hearts for Little Hands Committee, the steering committee that plans, executes and accounts for the annual fundraisers, as well as organizes the hundreds of AMA-member volunteers that have given countless hours of their time and resources to provide support with construction projects and intermittent events needed for the growing population that UMOM sees itself serving each year.
In addition to the monumental cash amounts that have been raised, members have given countless dollar amounts of in-kind services, in the form of donations (both time and material) to families for their clothes, child and teen programs. We are looking ahead to our biggest year yet in 2010 with incentives like a beautiful Lexus sedan as one of our high ticket raffle items donated by an AMA member to be part of our annual Can Drive and our 70’s themed Kick OFF Bowl-a-thon scheduled for mid September.
It all starts with our assembly event on August 18, 2010 from 2:00-5:00pm at the Mountain View Parks and Rec Center located at 1104 East Grovers in Phoenix on the NE corner of 9th Street and Grovers. Approximately 50 volunteers are expected to assemble the over 600 cans displayed at various AMA properties throughout the Valley to support UMOM and their ongoing work to mitigate the plight of f homeless families in Phoenix. Invited guests at this event include past donors such as the Rattlers and members of the Phoenix Police and Fire Departments.
