Homegrown Training Program

The goal of the Homegrown program is to help individuals gain marketable skills so they can Homegrown_Color_PROOF040814obtain employment, attain and maintain housing, and avoid future homelessness. Homegrown operates two programs. The Food Service Training Program and the Cafe Market Training Program.

After they complete the training, UMOM helps them secure and retain employment in the food service and hospitality industries.  The students attend job fairs, receive resume and job search assistance, and participate in mock interviews.

Food Service Training Program

Through the food service training program, students receive nine weeks of training graduate-comment-oneand hands-on experience to learn skills to work as dishwashers, prep cooks and line cooks in a commercial kitchen.  Students learn cooking skills in UMOM’s on-site commercial kitchen and prepare daily meals that are served in the dining room to UMOM’s residents, as well as food sold in UMOM’s social enterprise program, Helpings® Cafe, Market and Catering.  Each year, UMOM serves more than 190,000 meals for its residents, and caters hundreds of events, so the students have ample opportunity to hone their skills.

The nine-week training is broken down into three-week modules so that a new group of students can begin the program throughout the year.

Barista Training Program

UMOM’s six-week Barista program teaches customer service, cashiering and technical barista skills.The barista training component utilizes the Starbucks method of drink preparation curriculum. Trainees get hands on experience working in UMOM’s social enterprise, Helpings Cafe, Market & Catering.
