From Uncertainty to Opportunity: Jessica’s Fresh Start in Arizona
Jessica Petree, Halle Women’s Center client, stands in the UMOM New Day Center Courtyard.
When Jessica Petree, 42, arrived in Arizona to late January 2026, she brought with her more than just a few belongings, she carried years of housing instability and a deep hope for a fresh start.
After ongoing challenges in Nevada and California, Jessica could no longer stay in her father’s home. With a limited income and relying on Uber Eats deliveries to get by, she made the move to Arizona, knowing she needed something more stable. What she didn’t know was where to turn.
While searching for help, Jessica discovered the 2-1-1 Arizona resource line through an AI companion. That call became a turning point.
Through 2-1-1, Jessica was connected to UMOM New Day Centers, where she was quickly able to access emergency shelter at the Halle Women’s Center. It was there that Jessica began rebuilding her foundation. At UMOM, families and individuals are met with more than just a place to stay; they are connected to critical services designed to help them move forward, including case management, employment support, and housing advocacy.
For Jessica, her “move forward” moment began by enrolling in UMOM’s Workforce Development program.
She entered the program determined to change her circumstances but also faced significant barriers. She did not have credentials many employers require, such as a Food Handler Certificate or Fingerprint Clearance Card, and a short-term caregiver job ended early due to her limited experience. It would have been easy to feel discouraged.
But Jessica stayed focused.
With support from UMOM’s Workforce Development team, she received resume assistance, job readiness training, and participated in mock interviews. Her Indeed profile was completely revamped, helping her stand out to employers in a new way. The impact was immediate. Jessica received more responses, more interviews, and most importantly, more confidence.
Step by step, things began to shift.
Jessica has now secured a part-time cashier position at Fry’s grocery store – a meaningful milestone that represents stability, progress, and the beginning of a new chapter.
